The darkest minds (the darkest minds #1) By Alexandra Bracken

Book blurb (from goodreads):
When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

My review:

I have been putting of reading this book for a long time. Do I regret doing this? Yes. This book may not be my favourite book this year but I is up there somewhere in the top 20. Ruby was a great protagonist and I really liked the chracter development which she went through because at the begging of the book she wouldn't even stand up for herself against the soldiers at the concentration camp and at the end she was using her powers like the bad ass that I always new that she would become. The thing that I liked best about this character development is that I didn't really notice it happening. The changes were so subtle that I can only see how much she gradually changed in the book is when I compare the first chapter to the last ones.
Liam was a good person and I think a good love interest for Ruby. When they did have their moments together it was really cute and funny. I couldn't get enough of them, and that was one of my problems with this book I didn't feel like Ruby and Liam could develop their romance enough for me to say that they are in a relationship (although I do ship them both...).
The image made of east river almost seemed to go to be true and it did come of a bit of a shock for me when I found out who was running it and that they were also a orange. It seemed to good to be true that this was the safe heaven and I had a nasty feeling that everything was going to fall apart which it did in the end.
Zu was my favourite character in the book but I wish that we could of explored her story a bit more we only got the nightmare from her escaping the camp for her back story but I liked the fact that she used a note pad to talk and not words. I think that Zu was one of the best written characters in this book.
I don't know what to think of the children's league. I get the impression that they have good intentions but I they are going about it all wrong.
This book made me cry especially at the end when everything that is left falls apart one more time in the most dramatic way possible but I don't think that I would read the next book if it hadn't ended like that so a round of applause for Alexandra for making me want to read the next book sooooo badly!
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars!
